Tips that Will Forever Change Your Laundry Game

Tired of doing laundry? Here's how to save time and even make laundry fun (yes, we're serious).

Laundry has always been the least favorite household task for my sister and me. Just the thought of it annoys us, and we can't even say the word "laundry" without making a grumpy face.

In some countries, like Indonesia, you can get your laundry done for as little as €0.80 per kilogram. However, in Western countries, outsourcing laundry can be expensive, often beyond the budget of most people. This reality inspired me to discover affordable solutions and tips to make this necessary task more manageable and less tedious.

Here are 7 laundry essentials that will change the game forever:

1. Wash in Cold Water

Washing in cold water works for most clothes and can cut your energy costs by up to 50%. Heating water is the most expensive part of doing laundry, and switching to cold water could save you up to €60 per year for a two-person household. Plus, cold water is gentler on fabrics, helping your clothes last longer.

2. Sort as You Go

Stop sorting clothes right before doing laundry. Invest in three laundry baskets to sort whites, colors, and delicates as you undress. This system prevents mishaps like tossing a white sock into the color wash and saves time on laundry day.

3. Become a Stain Removal Expert

  • For oily stains, use an enzyme-based stain remover and a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the stain.
  • For stains like berries, use an oxygen bleach or hydrogen peroxide. For tough stains that are both oily and colored, start with an enzyme-based remover and follow up with hydrogen peroxide.

4. Build a Routine

Creating a laundry routine reduces stress, especially in multi-person households.

  • Determine frequency: Decide how often you need to do laundry based on your household size.
  • Choose laundry days: Optimize loads, save money, and prevent pile-ups by sticking to specific days.
  • Set time slots: Start washing early in the morning and plan to fold clothes by evening.

5. Organize Your Laundry Area

  • Choose the right containers: Use dispensers for liquids and glass jars for powders.
  • Label everything: Waterproof labels keep everything clear and organized.
  • Utilize shelf space: Open shelves can hold containers, and affordable options are available at stores like IKEA.

6. Minimize Ironing

Hang clothes immediately after washing or use the dryer for a few minutes before hanging them damp. This method reduces wrinkles and often eliminates the need for ironing.

7. Make Laundry Enjoyable

Turn on your favorite podcast, show, or call a friend while you do laundry. Distracting yourself makes the time fly and can even make the task enjoyable.

Make It Pretty

Once you've got the basics down, you can level up by making your laundry room aesthetically pleasing:

  • Paint the room in your favorite color and add personal touches like kids' drawings or a vision board.
  • Add a soft rug for comfort.
  • Use natural, textured baskets for a sense of luxury.
  • Install a floating shelf to display pretty jars of detergent and other supplies.
  • Add a plant for a touch of greenery if space allows.

Ideas for Small Laundry Spaces

Even if your laundry space is tiny, you can still make it functional and pretty. Move your machine to one side to create vertical storage or push it back to make room for door-mounted shelves. With a little creativity, even a 1x1 meter space can be transformed.

By following these tips, I’ve made laundry bearable and efficient, saving both time and money.
